TRUE GLITZ
Rendezvous, Rodeo & Rhinestones

A retrospective production that unveils not only HOW, but WHY the West was worn

With “True Glitz–Rendezvous, Rodeo & Rhinestones,” renowned historian/designers Michael and Sharon Guli
have compiled a captivating American heritage show that combines live entertainers in period dress exploring the connection
between modern Western style and Early American.

It is brought to El Paseo in Palm Desert, Calif.  by the Western Design Expo and the Palm Springs WestFest & Rodeo,
March 24-27.

Incorporating an exclusive Victorian stage show, talented Western characters and a professional cast of entertainers on a
state-of-the-art runway. True Glitz is a feature program of Fashion Week El Paseo produced by Palm Springs Life and benefits United Way of the Desert.

Designers include Nashville's esteemed Manuel, Couturier To The Stars.  Manuel will be showcasing his patriotic collection of rhinestone jackets of the 50 American states, each containing thousands of hours of sparkle and twang.

The Palm Springs Historical Society is lending actual garments from the Desert Circus era back in the glamorous
Hay Days of the 1950s.

A collection of mid-century Western couture from Nathan Turk, Nudie the Rodeo Tailor and Manuel will be spotlighted.

Various designers from the upcoming Western Design Expo at the Palm Springs Renaissance Hotel March 24 to 27 will also be featured in this retrospective. That exclusive shopping event is presented by Cowboys & Indians Magazine,
the premier magazine of the West.

Defining Western history involves more than conquistadors, cowboys and cattle. This is a multi-cultural journey, encompassing
Native Americans, the Europeans, explorers and traders from all walks of life who influenced the fashion and the design
and the architecture of what we know as Western Style — both Old West and New West.

As Michael and Sharon Guli explain it, "The fringe and beadwork of a Lakota Warrior, the artistic floral paintings of the Metis, the flamboyant Vaqueros, the short skirts worn by dance hall darlings in mining camps, the flirtatiously simple garments of the Mexican senoritas in Santa Fe...to Kit Carson and Buffalo Bill, Rose Maddox to Roy Rogers to Hank Williams...each of these influenced our modern Western perspective."

The Gulis have diligently researched the past from old journals and historic resources for decades. In True Glitz, they provide you the opportunity to see history come alive in a lighthearted, flamboyantly entertaining way and transform your beliefs about this uniquely American style.

Adding to the fun, Saloon Piano Historian Dave Bourne will perform arrangements blending old-time and modern music into an original score exclusively for this performance. You have seen David perform on HBO’s Deadwood.

The West has never been more exciting - or closer to the truth - than TRUE GLITZ.

Benefiting United Way of the Desert.
LIVE UNITED.

Michael & Sharon Guli of River Crossing Inc.
For more than 35 years, designer Michael J. Guli has been producing exceptional leather garments for movies, performers, museums, and individuals who seek historically-inspired, quality Old West styles. Mike’s educational background started at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where he studied painting, sculpture and clothing design, as well as Art History. His years of research, examining original pieces in museums and personal collections, and studying vintage photographs and paintings, enable his creations to reflect the flavor of the times in which the originals were produced. In addition, Mike’s background as a professional artist gives his designs a distinction not often found in leather garments, and makes them beautiful as well as functional. Last year, Mike was honored by True West Magazine as "Best Living Period Men's Clothing Fashion Designer" in their 2010 Best of the West Sourcebook.

Mike’s creations are worn by celebrities such as Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Waddie Mitchell, John McEuen of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Michael Martin Murphy, Hal Ketchum, Juni Fisher, Ted Dansen, and Tara Graham (Miss Rodeo American 2001), and he is the exclusive designer of the traditional white buckskin outfits worn each year by the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo Queen and her Lady in Waiting. His pieces have been shown at the Paris Western Show and the European End of Trail Western Celebration in Italy, and Mike has been a featured designer at the Western Design Conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Sharon Guli has been designing and creating historical clothing for eighteen years, with a special focus on Victorian ladies’ fashions and undergarments. She blends her background in historical re-enactment, vintage dance, and costuming with ongoing research to create garments that beautifully capture the look of each period, demonstrating her flair for design, regard for authenticity and attention to detail.

Sharon is also known for her entertaining and educational historic presentations, including the instruction of Victorian dance and etiquette. Sharon was recently honored to appear in a PBS documentary produced by the New Mexico History Museum titled, "Moments in Time: Fashioning New Mexico: Victorian Secrets."

Together, Mike and Sharon Guli operate River Crossing Inc., a company that specializes in historic clothing and presentations. Each year they bring history alive to thousands both nationally and internationally with trunk shows, period dances, fashion shows, lectures and numerous other programs.
